Flourishing Through Travel While Black: Unfiltered Voices of Black Travelers

This paper used the social media platform of Twitter to: 1) Examine Black travelers and their experiences, 2) Investigate if and how Black traveler’s voices have evolved over time with the development of the Black Travel Movement on Twitter, and to 3) Explore whether the experiences of Black travelers on Twitter map onto models of well-being and flourishing.

This review aims to facilitate research coordination and intervention development by providing an evidence-based framework for social determinants of health (SDoH) rooted in the lived experiences of marginalized populations. We present landmark studies and recent findings about SDoH in our framework, with careful consideration of the constructs and measures utilized. Finally, we provide a roadmap for future SDoH research focused on individual, clinical, and policy approaches towards developing community-engaged, multilevel interventions to promote CV health.

Humanities and Human Flourishing Project: The Impact of the Arts on Well-being and Shifting Attitudes

In a multi-week longitudinal study, we propose to experimentally examine the cultivation of skills linked to well-being via an arts-centered intervention that includes psychoeducational content on the target skills, virtual visual arts experiences designed to promote skill development, and rigorous experimental assessment of skill development and well-being improvements.

Conceptualizing Flourishing and Resilience in African Americans from Adolescence to Adulthood: On the Role of Ethnic-Racial Socialization

This paper explores how early developmental contextual factors (e.g. ethnic racial socialization and ethnic racial identity) can shape Black American youths’ flourishing across time. I am using The Maryland Adolescent Development in Context to explore factors that impact flourishing in Black adolescents, even in the context of environmental risks.

Cultural Responsiveness of a College Course
on Flourishing

The aim of this project is to examine the impact of a college flourishing course on students of color, to examine the cultural competence of the course, and to learn what cultural barriers exist to participating in mindfulness-based/flourishing interventions for people of color. We are currently in the data collection phase of this study and are conducting interviews.

Measurements of social determinants to enhance health equity: An integrative review.

In this integrative review of the literature, we are exploring “what are the current measures being used to assess social determinants of health”? The goal is to create a more equity-focused model of social determinants of health constructs that can be used to create better measurement tools.
